What remote engine start actually does
You press the lock button on your key fob three times, and the engine starts. That's it. The car will run for a set period with the climate system on, so by the time you get in, it's already at temperature. In the summer that means a cooled-down cabin before you open the door. In winter it means a warm car and a defrosted windshield without standing outside in the cold.
Because it's the factory system, it integrates properly with everything else. The alarm stays armed while it's running remotely. The doors stay locked. Nothing is bypassed or tricked. It behaves exactly like a BMW-engineered feature because it is one.
Why not just use an aftermarket system?
Aftermarket remote start modules require tapping into the wiring harness, which can introduce fault codes and cause headaches at the dealer. Some void certain warranty coverage. And they often don't integrate cleanly with BMWs because the car's systems weren't designed to accommodate them.
The factory activation avoids all of that. If anything ever needs to be inspected or serviced, there's nothing unusual in the car for a technician to question.
